Palmerston North City Council

Changes to the Resource Management Act 1991 allowed Councils the ability to review their District Plans in sections, rather than doing it in one hit every ten years. Palmerston North City Council was the first Council to take the sectional review approach and wanted to set the perfect example.

We were approached by the council’s David Murphy to create a brand and overall communications strategy to engage with people of Palmerston North for the next five years.

The result was Shaping our City – creating a sustainable future, a brand that is attractive and relates to the city by using elements of The Square, its central location and logistic hub, the Manawatu River and wind farms. A media launch was organised to unveil the project and announce the programme for the next five years.

After a quick trip to Palmy and a facilitated workshop with David and his team an overall communications strategy was born. This document will guide the overall sectional review and each section review has its own targeted strategy.

Twelve months on and four successful consultations later, we’re looking forward to the next campaign and adapting the strategy to communicate with key stakeholders.
